Your primary goal in studying the Bible should be to get the correct meaning. Personally, I find that the Bible has many twists and turns and at times is filled with mystery. The Lord promises however that those who prayerfully seek the truth will find it. This is especially important to keep in mind when studying the Bible. Some say that the Bible contradicts itself. I have to disagree with this; God in all His wisdom and righteousness had the Bible constructed in such a unique way that those who truly seek Him will be led by His Spirit who will impart insight.
I strongly encourage you to develop a personal, prayerful relationship with the Lord as you study your Bible. As your relationship grows deeper you will be able to more clearly see God working in your life.
If you don’t already have one, you will first need to find a Bible. Some studies suggested below require using other materials such as a Bible dictionary, maps or a concordance. If you are new to reading/studying the bible, I would recommend beginning by praying to God for direction and then start reading the bible. Have faith that God will guide you to the things He wants you to know. Here are some other ways to help get you started with your Bible study.
Start prayerfully reading the gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, John
- Create a list of words spoken by Jesus that touch your heart
- Think on these words and allow them to transform your life.
Make a list of topics or things you have always wanted more insight on
- Need suggestions? Try listening to the Bible on CD or the Bible Gateway and make a list of questions you may have. Then pick a topic and prayerfully study.
Study the different characters of the Bible
- Make a list of their traits and relationship they have with God.
- Look at your own life and think how you incorporate these traits into your life. Pray to the Lord for wisdom and courage to stand in righteousness.
- What do their names mean? Dictionary of Bible Names will be needed.
- Create your own Biblical Family Tree to see a historical timeline.
- Do a deeper study listing what lead to the fall of children from God’s faithful servants.
Pick a treasured scripture and dissect it
- You will probably want to use a Bible concordance along with a Greek and Hebrew Bible translation for this study.
Study the locations of important events
- You will need present and ancient day maps for this study.
Word Study – how the same word can have different meanings throughout scripture
- A Bible concordance will help you to locate verses containing the same words and list the original meaning.
Remember: whatever Bible study method you choose, prayer should always come first. If you are just getting started, check out the different types of prayer. I’m praying that you will find and stand for truth.
